This week I want to broach the topic of mental toughness and how it provides the cornerstone for all of life’s endeavors. There are many different forms of mental toughness all of which cannot be replicated in a gym setting through high weight/high intensity reps or countless numbers of barbell burpees and leg smashers. The terror of falling from a technically difficult climb and seeing all your protection rip out, to feeling live rounds thudding into your primary source of cover knowing that the person pulling that trigger wants to kill you where you lie, has to be experienced to develop mental toughness in that environment. What the gym lends itself to is creating mental toughness through physical challenge by having the athlete try and ignore the pain and focus on the task at hand – one rep at a time – be in the moment – nothing lasts forever mentality. Helping and encouraging the athlete to remove negative thoughts and emotions are key elements to this process. It is about controlling yourself and your thoughts when you feel like you are about to fall apart. There are many things in life that we cannot control – how we act and react in times of hardship and stress is one of them.

People often describe athletes as “tough,” as if they are made of steel. An athlete that consistently outperforms others is not tougher; they are simply fitter, more technically proficient and have forged their mental toughness in an arena of adversity. If an athlete can out-lift or outrun their opponents it has nothing to do with them being “tougher.” Mental toughness is not fixed real estate of the mind, nor is it some sort of magical force. Mental toughness is something that can and needs to be trained. Please don’t make the assumption that being mentally tough means that there is an absence of pain. Mental toughness is developing the ability to simply ignore it.

When you compare the fitness levels of most elite athletes in their chosen sport there is usually no more than a 1% difference in their fitness levels. It is their mental toughness, their ability to resist doubt and negative chatter in their own minds that helps them secure success (although some elements are due to genetic blueprinting and well executed training cycles.)

Here at Rogue we are wholeheartedly invested in the development of the individual which includes the development of mental toughness as well as physical fitness and agility. This is why we have partnered with the premier parkour gym in Colorado – Apex Movement – and developed our “Battle Ready Fitness” program. Battle Ready Fitness is based around the philosophy that there is a need to maintain a steady state of physical fitness and mental toughness/awareness that allows you to act/react in an array of scenarios that you may encounter in life – chosen or otherwise. It is our goal to provide you with the physical capacity to run significant distances, survive violent encounters, drag a family member from a burning building, climb mountains, rescue someone from drowning or create a solid foundation that will help you pursue whatever personal physical endeavors you choose, all the while helping you attain a new level of mental toughness. A large amount of focus is placed on mindset and developing an “iron will” mentality while supporting individual needs and developing a strong sense of teamwork and camaraderie. This preparation in the gym through our challenging workouts will allow you to perform where it really matters – outside of the gym!!
